Twenty-five years ago our community was very proud to open a state of the art Community Health Care Clinic. Community support for the clinic construction was outstanding as is usual for our community.

Since then thousands of patients, dozens of physicians and many dentists have used this facility. The presence of such a facility made it very convenient for our citizens who were patients and it also helped this community encourage physicians to practice medicine in Manitouwadge.

About 10 or 12 years ago some renovations were done to the clinic to update and improve the delivery of services to patients.

It is now time to complete a major renovation and updating of facilities to ensure that citizens have access to good health services and so that health professionals have an up to date modern facility from which to deliver these services.

The main reasons that the Hospital Board has decide to pursue this renovation project now are as follows:

1) Much of the equipment in the clinic at present must be updated to more modern standards.

2) With changing uses over time many of the clinic spaces have become inaccessible and inefficiently used. Space utilization and access laws are much different than they were 25 years ago when the clinic was first built.

3) Privacy issues, some of which are legal issues now, must be addressed. This will involve some design changes in the clinic space that were not required in 1980.

4) A modern community owned clinic is required to encourage physicians and dentists to come to our community. The evidence for this fact has existed in our own community for over 20 years and can also be found in dozens and dozens of communities throughout Canada.

5) Telehealth services and electronic record keeping require upgrading of electrical, telephone and computer systems. New record systems, innovative diagnostic tools and new information systems will require us to be ready and once our renovations are completed we will be ready.

6) There are also the usual required repairs and renovations needed by a 25 year old building in our Northern Ontario climate, that has had thousands of people in and out of it for over two decades. Windows, walls, floors, ventilation and the roof all must be upgraded and maintained.

You will be hearing more about this project as the days move on. Last week it was announced that Newmont has contributed $50,000 to our community project. What a great start!

Please return for more information and announcements on this very important community project.
